Godox and the ABC of live photography

Julkaistu 13.04.2020 (Päivitetty 13.01.2025)
A quick guide to what you need to create a mobile photography studio anywhere. Without power cords or sync cords! Equipment recommendations for a gig set.

Godox was one of the most searched brands in our online store, which was not part of our selection. Our customers also talked about these almost mythical flash units. They promised great features at a reasonable price. We always listen to our customers carefully, so we wrote contracts and ordered Godox products for our warehouse!

Our selection includes all the manufacturer's devices, so if you can't find what you're looking for as a finished product yet, please send us an email or call us.

One of the most popular Godox flashes is the battery-powered Godox Winstro AD400 Pro . The verycompact AD200 is also popular and is surpassed by the manufacturer's own devices in terms of features, but we decided to focus on the AD400 Pro model in this quick guide for a few reasons.

The first is power, this flash has a power of 400Ws. With this power you stand out from handheld flash photographers, you can go to a Finnish forest and shoot against the sun (the sun works as a handy hair light) and the result is magical images after training. In addition, with HSS fast synchronization you can stop even fast movement. You can record a mountain biker or other fast-paced sports enthusiast with an exposure time of up to 1/8000.

The second is full wirelessness, with a single charge you can shoot almost 400 shots and the number only increases when full power is not needed. The battery is directly attached to the flash body, so there are no wiring connections between the cooler-sized battery and the power unit. If you are shooting for hours, for example at an event, you can charge the battery while it is in use, meaning the charger acts as a power source.

In addition, the flash can be controlled directly with a radio trigger that is attached directly to the camera. The clear display of this trigger allows you to see the settings, light metering and intensity at a glance. Note. It is worth marking the number of the flashes with a sticker, for example, so you always know which light needs to be adjusted. The trigger can also be used to turn the control lights on and off.

We recommend the latest Godox X Pro II model as a trigger. This also controls the smaller Godox flashes mentioned earlier. There are brand-specific models of the trigger, so almost all cameras work with special features such as HSS and TTL metering.

Godox X-Pro II

The trigger has a range of up to 100m, so it works even on larger sets. It is powered by standard AA batteries that hardly ever need to be replaced. No power cords and no sync cables = no subjects tripping over cable adjustments.

So here's a good flash and a shutter release. What else do you need?

Sturdy stand for the light

For example, the Godox 380F Heavy-Duty light stand , which will rise high enough if you are taking wider shots or if there are a lot of people in the shot. A slightly heavier stand also works better with large softboxes and umbrellas, especially in windy conditions. In harsh conditions, add extra weights to the stand!

Softbox for light modification

The bigger the softer the light, but for gigs or outside we recommend a diameter of about 80cm. A round one will give a nicer reflection of light into the subject's eyes. It's definitely worth having an umbrella-style one that opens, so don't waste time assembling and disassembling these.

It's also worth getting a model that comes with a grid, you can keep the grid on almost all the time. It doesn't take up much light power, but you can focus the light on just the right spot and you don't shoot at walls unnecessarily. The light pattern becomes more controlled and you can see where the brightness of the light goes - by shooting a little off, you can control the contrast, i.e. where the light hits and which part remains darker!

The grid is quickly removable if you need to use all the light power, for example when shooting against backlighting or competing with the sun. The Godox AD400 Pro includes a Bowens-style mount, but as an additional accessory you can also get an adapter if you already have Elinchrome accessories.

An alternative to a softbox is an umbrella. There are two main types of umbrellas, reflective and through-beam. As a rule of thumb, reflective ones have a slightly colder and harsher light, while through-beam ones have a softer light. Umbrellas are inexpensive and have a direct mounting point on the flash, so they are also worth getting.
