The 10x magnification is enough to see the sights. Together with the 36mm front objective lens, the Vortex Solo 10x36 offers a field of view of approximately 108m at 1000m. The closest focusing distance is 4.9m.

Like most monoculars, the Vortex Solo is focused by turning the focus ring on the eyepiece end. The focus ring is thin, but the high ridges on the ring make it easy to see and turn, even with gloves on. Focusing from the closest focus distance to infinity requires less than one turn, so focusing is fast.

The rubberized body increases the impact resistance of the viewer, thus improving the chances of it being saved if accidentally dropped or bumped. The rubberized shell also improves grip, which is an important feature in damp or wet weather, as well as when wearing gloves.

The Solo monocular is waterproof. Thanks to the O-ring seals, the body is protected against moisture and dust, making the device waterproof. The seals are also airtight and the interior of the body is nitrogen-filled. This combination prevents fogging of the glass surfaces from the inside, as well as fogging, which often occurs when the temperature changes quickly, such as when going from a warm interior to a cold winter day.
