Tamron 70-180mm is a long-awaited novelty for Sony photographers. This follows the highly popular 28-75mm and 17-28mm lens series: the aperture is fixed at f2.8, the filter thread is 67mm. The focal length is still a bit different from what we are used to, but Tamron is taking every measure to ensure that the lens is bright and compact without compromising on image quality.
Here is a huge 40-minute test video of the Tamron 70-180mm lens. The comparison is with the Sony 70-200mm G Master top model. In summary, you could say that Tamron has designed a new favorite lens for Sony photographers:
All features of Sony cameras also work with the lens:
The lens weighs only 810g, for comparison, Sony's 70-200mm GM weighs almost 1500 grams. The lens forms a balanced whole on the Sony a7 series body even without the battery grip, and tracking a fast-moving subject is easy.
The Tamron 70-180mm F2.8 uses an all-new VXD focus motor, and two of them at that. According to the manufacturer, focusing is extremely fast and precise. This is essential to getting the most out of Sony's highly praised focus system.
The lens' closest focusing distance at the telephoto end is approximately 85cm, and at the 70mm focal length it is possible to focus down to a distance of up to 27cm (without autofocus). The Tamron 70-180mm does not replace traditional macro, but it does give you a lot of new possibilities for close-up photography!

The lens is weather-resistant and the outer lens surface is treated with a fluorine coating that makes cleaning easier.
