The Sigma BF is a pretty interesting camera. It features fast phase-detection autofocus, fast burst shooting, and 6K video recording. The body is L-Mount compatible, meaning you can use a wide range of lenses from Sigma, Panasonic, and Leica.
But none of these are certainly the most important features for someone considering this camera, because Sigma has gone for the design with this camera. The camera body is machined from a single piece of aluminum, all ports have been minimized. There is a USB-C port on the side, but the memory is a fixed 230GB SSD and like Leica, there is no battery door, but the battery blends into the bottom of the camera.
This has achieved a really great mechanical whole. It is a camera but also a beautifully designed object. The user interface looks simple, but Sigma's DP series of paperbacks and Sigma fp cameras have shown that Sigma knows how to design a camera that is also pleasant to use and does not cause frustration for the user.
As a new feature, the buttons include haptic feedback, meaning you can feel when a setting or adjustment has been made. The camera software has also been redesigned, meaning it is faster to control shooting settings with the touchscreen.
Especially when combined with Sigma's new lenses with an aperture ring, the whole thing becomes visually consistent, smooth to use, and the image quality is also good.
But this is no gimmick, with a modern 24.6-megapixel sensor, phase-detection autofocus, and object-detection autofocus. Like the FP series and the Panasonic S9, the camera lacks a mechanical shutter, so it's not the best choice for fast-paced action photography.
Video recording is okay even though it doesn't include RAW video recording, meaning the camera has an oversampled 4K mode, 6K 30P video recording. Wide-gamut L-Log recording. The 230GB internal storage can hold, for example, 4300 Raw photos or 2.5 hours of video. Video recording can also be done directly to an external hard drive via the USB-C connection.
