The Sigma 70mm f2.8 is the first macro lens from Sigma's Art series. The goal of the new lens design has been to achieve the best possible image quality in close-up photography. A recognizable feature of the lens is the increase in lens length when focusing close up. Instead of the common internal focusing, the Sigma 70mm uses two focusing elements that move in the front of the lens, this solution aims to achieve the lowest possible distortion and excellent image sharpness at all focusing distances.
Exceptionally, there will be no Nikon version of the lens at all, at least at the time of release. Due to the image quality-focused solutions used, the autofocus of the lens could not be achieved to the level that Sigma required with the Nikon system. This uncompromising approach is part of the principles of Sigma's Art series.
The focus is implemented electronically, so manual focus correction is possible even in automatic mode. The focus ring is large and has a large turning radius, so that the focus can be precisely adjusted even when shooting close-ups.
The lens mount is made of brass and has weather protection around it. The filter thread is a reasonable size of 49mm. The Sigma 70mm 2.8 is a so-called true macro, meaning it is capable of a 1:1 magnification ratio. The closest focusing distance is 25.8cm.
The sales package also includes a protective case and a lens hood (LH708-01).
