The Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art is designed entirely with image quality in mind, and you can tell from the size and weight of the lens. This beast weighs 1.2kg and the lens' filter size is a whopping 82mm relative to the focal length. So don't buy this if you want a lightweight lens that fits in your jacket pocket. Buy this if image quality is the most important factor for you and you're willing to suffer for it.
The size and weight are explained by the history of the lens, the 40mm Art is designed based on Sigma's 40mm Cine film lens. When making films, cameras are often on large tripods and image quality is more important than size, material with a maximum resolution of 8K projected on a large screen reveals all optical errors. The Sigma 40mm draws the image very accurately from edge to edge. In addition to sharpness, the color reproduction is also neutral, there is practically no CA color shift error and the image is drawn beautifully soft outside the depth of field.
The lens structure consists of 16 elements in 12 groups, using special lens elements. The Sigma 40mm Art includes an HSM focus motor and autofocus can be corrected manually. The focus adjustment ring is large and has a very good feel. The closest focusing distance is 40cm. The bayonet is made of brass and the lens is weather and dust protected.
Note: The product image and size information is for the Canon EF version. The Sony lens is slightly longer and heavier than the Canon version.
