The return of a favorite model! The Nikon Coolpix P1000 and this new P1100 are more than a superzoom, the cine equivalent of 24-3000mm is far beyond anything seen in digital cameras before.
The Nikon P1100 is a unique camera for capturing the details of nature. With full zoom, you can see details on the moon's surface like a telescope, distant birds from a birdwatching tower, or portrait-like close-ups of small birds in a yard tree.
In addition to distant subjects, the P1100 can take close-up photos, macro shots can be taken up to 1cm from the subject, and the 24mm wide-angle lens allows you to capture stunning landscapes.
The lens has a wide-angle aperture of 2.8 and a telephoto aperture of F/8. The more moderate aperture has not made the camera too large or cumbersome to use. The camera weighs about 1.4kg, but thanks to its good ergonomics, it stays firmly in the hand and is easy to follow even fast-moving subjects.
If you compare the focal length in use, the P1100 is surprisingly handy, but the point of comparison could be telescopes or old-fashioned mirror telephoto lenses without image stabilization or autofocus.
In order for the huge 3000mm focal length to produce a really high-quality image, a tripod or image stabilizer is needed. The camera has 4-stop stabilization, the power has not decreased compared to the P1000 model, but the CIPA standard measurement has become stricter. The lens has 5 ED lens elements that correct image aberrations and one Super ED lens (which is used only in very few Nikkor lenses)
The Nikon P1000's usability is also helped by its clever design, with the zoom switch also located on the side of the optics, which can be used while holding the camera firmly in your palm. The camera's electronic viewfinder is the same as in the previous model, but it was the most accurate used in Coolpix cameras, meaning the image looks sharp and detailed for a pocket camera. Manual focus works with the Focus Peaking feature, which emphasizes the outline of the object in focus.
Thanks to the electronic viewfinder, the camera can be used in the stable shooting position familiar from a system camera, where both hands and the camera form a stable triangle with your eye.
If you use autofocus, you can reprogram the camera's focus ring, turning the ring allows you to adjust, for example, exposure, white balance, and sensor sensitivity.
The camera also has a very handy Snap Back Zoom button, familiar from the previous model. By pressing this button, the camera zooms in on the image but shows the outline of the zoomed image on the screen. In the wide view, you can search for the desired object (e.g. a Saimaa ringed seal or a small bird), aim the camera so that the object is inside the small targeting box, then release the button and the camera zooms back in and the object is in the image.
The Coolpix P1100 also supports RAW images, so you can get the most out of your image files in post-processing. The camera has a 16-megapixel sensor with a size of 1/2.3 inches. The sensor's maximum sensitivity is ISO 6400.
The Nikon Coolpix P1100 records 4K UDH video (at 25 or 30fps). When recording video, the Nikon P1100's internal microphone also zooms, meaning it also records sounds from a narrower sector at long focal lengths. This way, you can also capture birdsong on video, for example. The camera also has a 3.5mm jack for an external microphone.
