The Leica Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH is an exceptionally compact and weather-sealed premium lens for L-mount. Unique, characteristic imaging.

This new Summilux 50mm F1.4 is a new type of lens for Leica's SL series. Previously, a rugged reference lens that strives for flawless reproduction was released under this name in 2016.
This 2026 Summilux-SL 50mm f/1.4 ASPH is 45% lighter and about 40% shorter, and according to the manufacturer, it is the world's smallest autofocus 50mm F1.4 optic. On the other hand, the features have also been expanded to include IP54-level weather protection that can withstand even the toughest use, as well as a significantly faster VCM focusing motor that is also used in competitors' top models.
However, the optical structure is new, meaning this is not based on previous lens models like Leica's Classic series, but there is a clear philosophical shift from raw resolution and edge sharpness towards a more characteristic image.
At full aperture, the image takes on a pleasant look, both in highlights and in bokeh outside the field of view. This is almost impossible to do with post-processing or diffusion filters. And when you dim the image, it becomes salon-worthy and sharp like a modern Leica. So here is the dichotomy of the Classic series, but a little more subtle, meaning the effect is not as strong as in the M-series Summilux reissues.
So it's almost like two lenses in one. The aperture not only controls the exposure, but also the mood of the image.
But as mentioned, otherwise the design and construction are modern, including, for example, a new method of manufacturing aspherical lenses that has previously only been used in the 35mm Noctilux-M F1.2 lens.
The Leica Summilux-SL 50mm F1.4 ASPH is weather and dust-protected in construction, and the front lens elements are coated with an easy-to-clean and dirt-repellent AquaDura coating.
