The Canon C300 Mark III is a professional camcorder for demanding use. The body and connections are the same as the top-of-the-line C500 Mark II, but this one has a Super35-sized sensor. The Canon C300 III features a Dual Gain Output sensor and noise levels and dynamic range are close to or better than full-frame cameras, and the choice is more between the desired depth of field and focal lengths.
The image quality is therefore okay and in other respects the camera is also Cinema EOS-level, meaning it comes with comprehensive connections, good codecs such as Cinema RAW Light and internal adjustable ND filters. The crowning glory is a compact body that also works when shooting handheld.

The Canon EOS 300 III features a Super35-size image sensor with Dual Gain Output technology. This DGO sensor technology is the secret behind the incredible image quality. The C300 Mark III captures up to 16+ stops of dynamic range, more than even the full-frame C500 Mark II cinema camera, and will remain the absolute top-of-the-line in 2024.
The DGO sensor reads each pixel in the image at two different gain levels (high–low) and combines them into a single image. This means that the shadows are extracted without noise and the highlights are also given tonal and color information.
In the final image, the gain levels of the different pixels are combined, so details are sharp and dark areas are clear. The technology should not be confused with the Dual Iso implementations of some manufacturers, as this Dual gain works at all ISO values.
Because Dual Gain Output works well in the early stages of image processing and is not just a software trick, it is also fully utilized in HDR workflows. The Canon EOS C300 Mark III supports Hybrid Log Gamma and PQ technologies. In addition, Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3 wide tone gamut recording are available. In addition, with the EOS Standard and EOS Neutral color profiles, you can get a similar image to Canon's mirrorless system cameras if you combine these cameras in the same production.
Canon is known for its great color gamut and now offers warm and natural skin tones straight out of the can. It has built-in Cinema EOS color tables and you can also load 3D LUT files into the camera for preview and to streamline production.
Fortunately, the new DGO sensor technology is compatible with Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus, a technology that is familiar and very well-proven from Canon's SLR cameras.
The Canon C300 also includes Dual Pixel Focus Guide, meaning that when focusing manually or with manual focus lenses, the camera shows information whether the focus is in front of or behind the subject.
The camera does not have an image stabilizer, but EIS electronic stabilization works surprisingly well in new cameras. The camera recognizes the focal length of EF lenses directly, but with cinema and vintage lenses the focal length is marked through the menus. The stabilization limits the image to about 11% of the area.
Although the image quality is the same in the C70 and C300 Mark cameras thanks to the sensor and technology, there are also differences between the cameras. Here are the most important ones!
Like a production camera, the C300 Mark III has excellent connectivity, with audio recorded via an internal mic, a 3.5mm input, and two full-size XLR inputs, all with phantom power. Audio is recorded at 24bit 48KHz quality, and the controls are very versatile.
The Canon C300 III also includes a 12G-SDI connection, which is missing from the C70 camera, for example.
For a film camera, the camera is quite light and thanks to its modular design, the body can be attached to vehicles or stabilizers, for example. If needed, the camera can be equipped with a monitor, handles and connection panels sold as accessories.
The storage media is two CFExpress memory cards, meaning that the material can be saved to two cards at the same time or can be saved with different settings, for example a proxy that ends up being viewed quickly and a higher quality file on the second card.
The frame is designed for heavy-duty professional use.
