This book introduces the amateur photographer, or even the professional, to the world of black and white photography with practical examples.
The history of photography, and photography itself, is almost two hundred years long. The first hundred years were practically a black-and-white era, and black-and-white is back in fashion. A black-and-white photograph brings back magical memories for many. The appearance of an image on paper in the developing tank is still an emotional moment for many photographers.
When color came along, photography changed from a form of expression mastered by a few to a hobby for the masses and an increasingly visible part of everyday life. Today's photographer is in many ways in a better position than his predecessors. The entire technical arsenal that has been in use for two hundred years still exists - but there is much more besides. If a phone is not enough as a tool, the photographer can choose between a digital camera or film - or even prepare his own emulsions on a glass plate.
Photography is a process that starts with seeing, finding the important shades of gray, and continues to the final image, the print. It's about exploring the mindset and the final image, as well as applying the technique. Much of the basics and goals are the same, whether you shoot on sensor or film. The practices of development are reviewed with both techniques and a high-quality black and white print is worked on.
