Softboxes

Softboxes for studio photography and lighting. Softboxes are used like umbrellas to soften and magnify the light source. However, with a softbox you can control the shape, direction and boundary between light and shadow much better than with an umbrella.>

Softboxes come in many different sizes and shapes. The larger the softbox, the softer the light, but this also requires more power from the light. As a rule of thumb, the size of the softbox should be approximately the same as the size of the subject.

What is the best size for a softbox?

There is no best size, as it all depends on your shooting style and what you want from your images. However, there are some guidelines for softbox size that can make it easier to choose a softbox.

  • Face and bust photos - 18-24' (i.e. approximately 45cm - 60cm)
  • Half-body shot - 36' (about 90cm)
  • Full body photos - 42' and larger (approx. 100cm and larger)

The 32'x48' softbox is very versatile. It can be used a bit like a window to simulate natural light. This size works for baby photos, portraits, and if you are shooting a group, by turning the softbox sideways you can light the entire group.

What is the difference between a softbox and an umbrella in light modifiers?

  • A softbox allows for much better light direction than an umbrella.
  • Softboxes allow for a rectangular catchlight in the subject's eye, while umbrellas create a circular catchlight. Many photographers prefer a rectangular catchlight because it is more similar to a window and the natural light coming through it.
