Studio flash or speedlite hand flash?

The camera's built-in flash is usually not enough to illuminate the desired situation. In addition to the low power of the camera flash, it is also small enough that the light created by such a flash is harsh and pinpoint.

A handheld flash, also known as a Speedlite, is a separate flash unit that can be used either on the camera or remotely, where the connection between the flash and the camera is made using a radio transmitter or cable. The head of the handheld flash is rotatable, allowing the light to be directed in any direction and bounced, for example, off a ceiling or wall, softening the light. Light modifiers, such as MagMod products, can also be used with handheld flashes.

Studio flashes differ from handheld flashes in terms of power, control light, and features. Professional studio lights also have a consistent color temperature, so there are no color errors between consecutive shots. This reduces or makes post-processing easier.

Godox studio flashes

Godox's range covers the entire spectrum of flashes, from beginner to professional, so you can find the right light for your genre or skill level.

Key points when choosing a studio flash:

1. Battery-powered or mains-powered?

Do you only shoot in the studio, or will you always carry lights with you? Godox offers battery-powered flashes in the AD series, as well as the mains-powered QTII, QSII, DPIII, SKII series.

The Godox AD series revolutionized live photography. If you shoot a lot of portraits in corporate settings, do portraits in nature, or set up photo spots in public spaces, battery-powered operation is a feature that cannot be praised enough. No need to worry about where to get power, no need to pull long cords, or fumble with cables.

The mains-powered QTII, QSII, DPIII, SKII series flashes are suitable for fixed installations in the studio. One of the advantages of not requiring a battery is that you don't have to worry about whether the battery has enough power during shooting.

2. How much power do you need from the flash?

One of the biggest challenges for photographers is how much light output they need from their flash and what kind of power they need for each type of shooting. Studio flashes are usually rated in watts. Godox has made it easy to compare power by including the wattage in the model number of each studio flash.

Sometimes you need subtle lighting to complement the natural light coming from a window. Sometimes you need powerful light output in harsh and dynamic lighting conditions. If you are shooting portraits, product photos or food photos indoors, you may not need the most powerful light in the range. In such cases, 200W and 300W options could be suggested as an alternative. If you are shooting portraits outdoors in very bright light, you need a powerful light that "beats" the sun, i.e. allows you to shoot against backlight.

We recommend choosing a light that is slightly more powerful than your needs, as it is possible to adjust the light output downwards. This also means that you will not necessarily find yourself in a situation where you notice that the power is not enough.

Rough guideline:
200W - Home Studio, product description
300W - Home studio and small studio, portrait photography, child photography, product photography, small group photography
400W - Portrait photography, small studio, large product photography, group photography, outdoor portrait photography
600W - Studio, outdoor portrait photography, large group photography, vehicle photography
800W - Large studio

3. Speed - flash time and charging time

If you're shooting fast-paced action like sports, dancing, skateboarding in the sun, or any other activity that involves movement, you need a flash that can keep up with your camera's shutter speed. HSS (High-Speed Sync) allows you to use your flash at shutter speeds faster than 1/200. With Godox HSS-enabled devices, you can go up to 1/8000.

In Godox's range, the battery-powered AD series lights include the HSS feature. In mains-powered devices, HSS can be found in the Godox QTII series. The same series also offers speed in terms of charging time, as it is a whopping 0.9 seconds at full power.
