The Voigtlander 21mm F3.5 Color-Skopar is a wide-angle lens for Leica M-mount cameras. We definitely recommend this F3.5 aperture version. The previous 21mm F4 Pancake still works with film cameras but clearly lags behind this lens in image quality both on Leica cameras and when used with an adapter on, for example, Sony cameras.

The better image quality is due to the new optical structure, which means that the light enters the camera more directly and the glass surfaces on top of the sensor do not affect the image. In addition, the Voitgländer 21mm 3.5 contains an aspherical lens element. In other respects, this is exactly what a wide-angle should be, at full aperture it is already quite sharp, especially in the center of the image, and by dimming the edges also become flawless, distortions are non-existent. There is some vignetting, but this is then easily corrected in post-processing.

Although the word pancake has been dropped from the name, this lens is still surprisingly small and the filter thread is only 39mm. The mechanical quality is excellent, meaning the aperture control works precisely and this is a pleasure to handle. The lens is marked II, which means that Voigtländer has a vintage-style look and the lens barrel is made of brass, meaning a traditional look is combined with a modern lens structure.

In addition, the II version has the Focus tab, which is appreciated by many, meaning that focusing is easy and, for example, zone focus can be done with muscle memory. The wide depth of field makes this a quick and fun camera to shoot.

This 21mm focal length is already very wide, meaning that you can see mostly the center in the viewfinder, more precise framing is possible with a separate viewfinder or, for example, Leica's electronic viewfinder or on the rear screen. The closest focusing distance is 50cm, which offers quite narrow viewing angles.
