There are probably rolls of film lying around in your basement or your parents' attic that no one has watched in decades, whether it's due to a lack of a suitable projector or a lack of time.
The Kodak Reels Film Digitizer is a convenient solution: it scans 8mm and Super 8mm film and saves it as MPEG-4 video directly to a memory card without a computer, software or drivers. You can then watch the videos on any device from TV to smartphone.
Digitization does not require a computer, software or technical expertise. The device works completely independently: you insert the reel like in an old projector, press a button and the device does the rest. The finished video is saved directly to an SD card, from where it can be transferred to a computer or television.
Installing the film is similar to loading an old projector: the film is threaded through the device from one reel to the next under four black holders. The device clearly indicates if the film is skewed, and the included gray and red reel size adapters ensure that different sized reels sit securely in place. There is also a switch on the side of the device that selects the film type between 8mm or Super 8mm – remember to set this correctly before starting digitizing.
Once the film is in place, select "Capture" from the menu and press OK. The device scans the films frame by frame and automatically combines them into one MP4 video file. The scanning speed is 2 frames per second and the final playback frame rate is 20 fps , which corresponds to the original movement of the film.
Before starting digitizing, it is a good idea to use the device's Frame Adjust function to crop the image and, if necessary, adjust the exposure, sharpness and color tone in the Picture menu. These adjustments are especially helpful when the film is aged or unevenly exposed – and are made directly on the device without post-processing.
Please note that the device does not record sound. Films typically do not have a soundtrack, so this does not limit their use in practice. The condition of the film affects the final result: a very worn or torn film can jam the device, so it is worth checking the films before digitizing. The quality of the digitization also largely depends on the original film, i.e. a film in good condition produces a clearly sharp and colorful final result.
The finished videos are saved to an SD card as MP4 files. They can be transferred from the card normally using a card reader, or alternatively, the device can be connected directly to a computer using the included Micro USB cable and the files can be transferred through that.

Note: Remember to purchase an SD card separately – it is not included in the package. The maximum size is 128 GB, which is enough for a long digitizing session.
